چکیده

Anastomotic leaks and fistulae are among the major life-threatening post-esophagectomy complications, with incidence rates ranging from 3% to 10%, increasing post-surgical mortality to about 20% [1]. The successful closure of post-surgical fistulae may be achieved by the use of fully covered, self-expandable, metal esophageal stents (SEMSs) [2]. When SEMSs are selected for treatment, stents need to be removed after 4–6 weeks. Endoscopy and contrast radiography examination may help to evaluate whether a fistula has been effectively closed [3]. If closure has not occurred, another stent should be placed at the site, followed by reassessment after another 3–4 weeks. Whereas multiple stenting may be needed for the management of persistent fistulae, this significantly impacts the final treatment costs. Fully covered SEMSs (Hanarostent; M.I. Tech, Seoul, South Korea) have been our preferred choice E-Videos

Subclavian artery-esophageal fistula after placement of a self-expanding metal stent in a patient with esophagogastric anastomosis stenosis

Background: There have been reports on stent-related vascular erosions about patients with benign or malignant stenosis of the esophagus who received endoscopic stent insertion for palliative intention for oral intake. Case presentation: A 61-year-old woman with esophageal cancer located in the middle part of esophagus was treated with esophagectomy. Two years following the surgery, malignan...

Palliative esophageal stent placement using endoscopic guidance without fluoroscopy.

AIMS Fluoroscopy is not available in every endoscopic unit. This situation leads to delays in treatment or to transfer of patients to other centres for stent insertion. We assessed safety and effectiveness of expandable esophageal metal stent placement under endoscopic control without fluoroscopy using a thin gastroscope. PATIENTS AND METHODS From October 2002 to June 2004, thirty-three conse...

Successful endoscopic removal of three embedded esophageal self-expanding metal stents

In the report, we describe a case of refractory benign esophageal strictures from esophageal cancer after an operation for the placement of three partially covered self-expanding metal stents (SEMSs), which were all embedded in the esophageal wall. Using the stent-in-stent technique, the three embedded SEMSs were successfully removed without significant complications. To the best of our knowled...

Tracheal Penetration and Tracheoesophageal Fistula Caused by an Esophageal Self-Expanding Metallic Stent

Tracheal penetration of esophageal self-expanding metallic stents (SEMS) with/without tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) formation is a rare occurrence. We report the case of a 66-year-old female patient with advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma who had undergone palliative esophageal stenting on three occasions for recurrent esophageal stent obstruction. On evaluation of symptoms of breath...
